I gave it a go - grid was tough - I ended up revealing 50%+ after 30 minutes and no joy on the meta. I thought I saw something while solving but I nothing else seems to support what I saw.

I love new contributors, but when a first puzzle seems very hard at best, it's difficult to commit time to it, not yet trusting the constructor.

Did the grid of the "thing" :D and have several key words and/or concepts that relate, but haven't been able to assemble them into a distinct musical instrument yet. Sleeping on it ---

Never mind -- got it, I think --- Will check with madhatter --

I got the grid relatively quickly but am lost on the meta. Still trying though. Added comment:I’m pretty sure I have it and I think it’s a fair, and relatively easy meta.

Hi all,

As oldjudge pointed out, I should specify that the answer to this puzzle is a WOODWIND instrument.

Hadn't noticed the PDF option on the webpage. From it I was able to create:

20201102 madhatter5 — Off the Scale — Excel Blank
Whole blood, platelets, or plasma: Donate 4 in 2024

PLATELET 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗲.

I just took another look for 10 minutes during lunch - still totally LAS w/o even one thread to try to pull on - so I think that’s it for me. Good luck to everyone else still working!

I had a solid answer for the instrument; now I see it is a woodwind. Pretty sure I have it but I like my original answer as well.

Well I guess I can stop looking for my old instrument, the trombone. I saw BONE in the middle entry and was off on the rabbit hunt.

Solution here:

Inside each of the 15-letter themers is a type of fish (TUNA, BONE, SWORD).

Taking a hint from 1-down, if you look at the taxonomic families of these fish we have:

TUNAFISH -> Scombridae

BONEFISH -> Albulidae

SWORDFISH -> Xiphiidae

Taking the first letters of these gives us SAX, a woodwind instrument.
