How to send a private message

#1

Post by BrianMac »

Private messages, or PM’s, are a nice feature of the site. It’s basically like email for the members of the forum. You can manage your private messages in the “Private messages” tab of the User Control Panel, which you can access by clicking the “Private messages” icon next to your user name in the upper right corner of the page.

Your private messages are organized into three “folders.”
      • Inbox – Private messages you have received from other members. New messages appear with a red icon next to them, just as unread posts appear on the forum.
      • Outbox – Private messages you have sent, but which the recipient has not yet opened. Private messages here can be edited or deleted the same way you would edit or delete a post: Click on the subject of the message to open it, and then click the “pencil” button to edit it or the “x” button to delete it (these buttons appear to the left of your name or avatar). Once the recipient opens the PM, it is moved into your Sent folder and it can no longer be edited or deleted.
      • Sent Messages – Private messages you have sent and which the recipient has opened.
You can store up to 1000 messages in each folder. If you start to approach that, you will need to delete messages, which you can do by checking the box to the right of a message in any folder, and then select “Delete marked” from the menu at the bottom, and then “Go.”

How to send a Private Message
There are a number of ways to send a Private Message. From the Private Message tab of the User Control Panel, you can click the red New PM button:

This brings up a space for you to compose a PM. You need to add the recipient (the Forum username of the person you are sending to), a Subject Line, and the body of your message. You can preview it just like a post, but you must press the Submit button in order to send the message.

Another way is to click the username or avatar of the person you want to send to, which will bring up their profile. Under their name or avatar in the profile is a "Send private message" link which will bring up the Compose window above.

      Replying and Forwarding Private Messages
You can reply and forward PM's just as you do with emails by clicking the red "Send Reply" or "Forward" buttons that appear at the top of the message.

Remember, that at the end of every message, you must press "Submit" to send it, regardless of whether you have previewed the message or not (the same is true for posts).
