Wonderful puzzle by Evan. This meta took me a little longer than normal to figure out, but it is lots of fun.

Thanks for the heads-up, oldjudge; fun indeed. Big grid 22x22 gives lots of room for the theme material. Is the theme content well enough known to make this a fair meta? Maybe it is ...

Fun once I figured it out. You do have to be familiar with a certain something, though.

I solved it without being familiar with that certain something. If you are logical you don’t need that piece.

With help, I got it. For me, the "certain something" became apparent mid-solve.
