Puzzle by Malaika Handa (not a crossword)

#1

Post by FrankieHeck »

I saw this one on Twitter. It's by Malaika Handa, who puts out daily 7x7 crosswords online. This isn't a crossword, and it does require a printer. She's even been mailing out copies to people who don't have access to a printer.

There's a lot going on here, and I haven't yet made it all come together. Wouldn't mind putting brains together on this one.

I'll be glad to join. Looks crazy. I'll try to absorb it for a bit . . .

Feel free to join! My brain has kind of shut down on this one though, so I'm taking a break. Hector is making some progress!

Correction: Hector has just about solved the whole thing, and I *never* would have gotten to that point.

We have definitely gotten the first step, and maybe the second step, but there is more to go. Happy to nudge or just share where we are. Email would work best: hectorpefo at gmail.

This looks fantastic, so I definitely hope to take a crack at it sometime this week! She has cited it as her favorite puzzle she's ever created, and if that's true, some of that joy inevitably spills over to the solver in the process. :)

I needed a nudge from Malaika, which got me to the finish line. Really ingenious puzzle. Turns out I made it a lot harder than it has to be; it's not exactly *hard* so much as *tricky*.

After working on this for this on and off for the past few days, I finally got there (with a little nudge from Malaika to get over one speed bump).

If you’re working on this I highly recommend sticking with it— there are a few awesome aha moments and it’s such a unique and well-constructed experience.
I can be found in Sheridan, NY, veejaying. (8)

I made some progress last night after being semi-stymied after the first step.

It took me 3 hours just to fold this thing into a cootie catcher correctly.

I will figure the rest of it out eventually...

Yeah, it's been about 35 years since I last did one of these.
