It took me a while to get the Love Boat reference. Nice. Charo would be proud.

Wasn't sure where to post this, but Exciting and New sounded like a good place.

In addition to the other things I and others have already mentioned, I am really enjoying being able to come in and select unread posts, rather than have to scroll through to see if there were any replies or where the new posts began.

Grateful for Brian's speedy work setting this up and I'm sure he will even be coming up with more good ideas.

The comments on the wsj page seem to let you *reply* to comments (but not make an original post).

Since we're inaugurating a new board this week, thought we should have some new lyrics for the Love Boat theme song:

Meta forum, exciting and new
Come aboard, we’re expecting you
Metas, life’s sweetest reward
Solve the grid, the answer comes to you
The Lost at Sea Cruise soon will be making another run
The Lost at Sea Cruise promises something for everyone
Have a drink with Isaac
Share stories of family or sports
And metas won't hurt anymore
You’ll soon be on your way to a friendly shore
Yes metas…
It's metas…
Welcome aboard the new forum!

Funny story (maybe) - I sometimes sing snippets of songs around the house. The “exciting and new” line is one of those snippets. Now my kids sing it. And they have no idea where it comes from (yet).

As a child of the '70s, I knew I'd found kindred spirits reading the WSJ board and seeing all the Love Boat jargon.

Now that I'm regularly doing WSJ, MGWCC, MMMM, Fireball, and PGWCC, I realized that this song describes my relationship with metas:

https://youtu.be/xY3gZMQpFOs?t=35

I Cain't Say 'No' (from Oklahoma)

I'm just a girl who cain't say 'no'
I'm in a turrible fix!
I always say 'Come on, let's go'
Just when I aughta say 'Nix.'

When a puzzle comes and I’m busy
I know I aughta give that one a pass
But I take one peek and before I know
I’m getting buried in the morass

I'm just a fool where metas go
I don’t have any restraint
That is my only complaint
But how can I be what I ain't?
I cain't say 'no!'

Whatcha gonna do when a meta is published
An' people say it’s clever
Whatcha gonna do?

S'pposin' that ya know that
You could win a prize,
A mug or pen or book
Whatcha gonna do?

What if it’s a puzzle by
Matt or Mike or
Pete or Pat or some new guy
Whatcha gonna do when a puzzle comes your way?
Just let it lie?

I'm just a girl who cain't say no,
Cain't seem to say it at all
I hate to let a meta go
Once it’s got me in its thrall

Fer a while I act refined and cool,
And I’ll just let that new puzzle sit
Then I think how great the aha would be,
So I just gotta try to solve it!

I cain't resist a meta, no
Guess that is my handicap
Somethin' inside of me snaps
I’ve got to solve it asap
I cain't say no!

Thanks! I played in a pit orchestra for Oklahoma last month, so that song was running around my head and I realized how well it would work for metas.

Love it! I feel similarly about metas and crosswords. Also impressed with the pit orchestra--what instrument do you play?

I play saxes and clarinets. And I love musicals.

Excellent! My husband plays violin and also sings, so he was often either in the pit or onstage for college and community shows years ago. Our daughter takes after him and performs in a youth orchestra and in school shows. I just enjoy watching :-)

Wow! Crosswords made the front page of today's Wall Street Journal!

https://www.wsj.com/articles/todays-cro ... 1556030620

(One thing about the new board I'm still not clear on is when to create a new topic and when to just add a reply to an existing one.)
