#6 - "First Off"

Published weekly by expert constructor Peter Gordon, the Fireball crossword is famous for being hard. How hard? Well, in the words of Peter Gordon, if you need to ask, too hard for you! It is not regularly a meta crossword, but does feature a contest or meta puzzle several times throughout the year. Available here for a subscription: http://www.fireballcrosswords.com

Easy but fun start to the year for Fireball. Peter is a great constructor.

I'm on fire! Or is it, I put out the fire? Great balls of fire? Anyway, I got it.

Wow... stared at this grid for twenty minutes and had nothing. Came here and read comments that it was easy, went back and got it in under thirty seconds... the power of suggestion!

Also solved and submitted...this is my 2nd year as a Fireball subscriber and last year he had a chess-themed contest puzzle; this one seems similar in difficulty level and straightforwardness to that one. I guess he's getting it out of the way early this year.

Yeah, got it pretty easily. Within the puzzle there was an... unwelcome reminder...
