#21 - "Semi'd'omes"

Published weekly by expert constructor Peter Gordon, the Fireball crossword is famous for being hard. How hard? Well, in the words of Peter Gordon, if you need to ask, too hard for you! It is not regularly a meta crossword, but does feature a contest or meta puzzle several times throughout the year. Available here for a subscription: http://www.fireballcrosswords.com

I submitted a guess which seems to me to work thematically, but I wonder if there's a surer confirmation than I was able to manage.

You may have guessed right, but there's a way to work it so your answer feels like a 100%-er. Good one!

I saw something, and it was off to the races....but it turned out to be the wrong race. Then I noticed something else and ran to another race, but that too was not the right race. Finally realized I was overcomplicating things, and now have the answer. I assume the red herrings were intentional. Sorry to mix fish and horseracing metaphors in same comment.

Ah, yes, there's a solid confirmation. Fortunately I'd guessed correctly.

Agreed: it's a 100%-er (and a great meta).

Yup! I got it!

Now on to the MGWCC. I love weeks with more than two metas. :)

Let's see, I believe I've done four metas this week: WSJCC, MGWCC, PGWCC, Fireball ... Anyone know of others? My wife is out of town until tomorrow, and I'll need entertainment tonight.

This one took me longer to get through the grid than to solve the meta.

On the one hand, 21A? Really? Was that necessary? On the other hand, amazing that he found a way to get what he needed in there at all.

Yeah, that was a totally unheard of thing for me! I figure things like that will come in handy during my appearance on Jeopardy!, you know, when that happens.

Maybe you'll be the one to break the streak of this current champ and set a new record!
