#33 - "Set Pieces" – September 9, 2020

Published weekly by expert constructor Peter Gordon, the Fireball crossword is famous for being hard. How hard? Well, in the words of Peter Gordon, if you need to ask, too hard for you! It is not regularly a meta crossword, but does feature a contest or meta puzzle several times throughout the year. Available here for a subscription: http://www.fireballcrosswords.com

This, I understand, is the first contest crossword since Fireball Crosswords returned from summer vacation.

Peter Gordon is looking for a twelve-letter answer hinted at by the puzzle.

I've submitted. Have fun!

Week-1-ish. You don't need to solve on paper, but at looking at the pdf will help.

This was fun. Love the concept - so much you could do along those lines.

Very innovative idea. Not hard, but fun. Now on to PGW.

That's why this forum is so great. I've been floundering for 30 minutes trying different things.
Read the comments; get renewed confidence; take a fresh look; solution pops out in 30 seconds.
The site is just a web page, a meeting place, a clubhouse - it's the group that's special.

Well I've done the first part of your recipe for success... now to flip the egg timer and finish it!

Considering the theme, this could have been much harder than it was.
I still enjoyed it.

Wow, I certainly overthought that one! Same experience as Abide. Nothing > Look at these comments > Solve instantly
Happy to give nudges. If you notice I've solved, please tell me about avenues you've explored so I can nudge you in the right direction and not off a cliff.

Stupidly I only looked at one "standard" setup in my search images that had white on the top side and black on the bottom. Too busy prepping the house to sell to care.
