What longtime industrial manufacturing company is hinted at by this puzzle?

Enjoy!

Sent in a guess that's not really 100%. Definitely got the first step, which to be fair does suggest an answer all by itself, but not very satisfyingly. There's another thing I don't really understand, but which I suppose might be intended as a confirmation in a certain way, but in a way that makes for a definite oddness. If anyone is more 100% than that, I'd be grateful for a PM explaining it.

As vague as that sounds, I know EXACTLY what you mean, haha!

Not 100% certain, but got a pretty obvious answer and sent it in. If it's not it's not.

Uh oh. I came to the fairly obvious answer. (After some struggle with the grid. Did others here find it a bit difficult?) Then I emailed the blank puzzle to my brother-in-law, who was a bit curious about meta puzzles -- and I thought this one might be a good intro for him, because the "obvious" answer I found is a company he once worked for. I hope my "obvious" answer is correct. Otherwise I'll need to 'splain myself!

No worse than any other Fireball. At least this one wasn't a "Not"

I complained this one was torturing me on the WSJ page, but I’m pretty sure I have it.

One down for the weekend. Two to go. Nothing better than solving metas while watching October baseball.
