Still searching for the answer (and can’t post any specifics about what confused me until the solution is officially revealed), but still can say what a cool grid! Wish me luck on the meta.. We have what we think is a starting point but you never can tell!
P.S. Hubs and I always work on these together, and I always submit that it wasn’t a solo solve

Have to submit but it's a 100%er. Nice puzzle, and I'm looking forward to both Matt posting an MMMM style write up including a youtube link to he and his family covering the song, and the WELL ACTUALLY comment going up on crossword fiend at 12:08 PM on Tuesday explaining in great detail why the answer is wrong.

Beam me up. Graduated from high school when that was popular. I guess that makes me..... old.

I just blasted it (from YouTube) and our African Grey REALLY got into it.
That bird likes to bop to music.

When I first saw the title, I had an idea what the mechanism would be. I was completely wrong - no connection at all. Thought that only happened with the solutions that came to me while I slept, but apparently I can come up with them while I'm awake too.
I'm embarrassed to admit that I had to scan a list of 80s #1 hits, I didn't just think of the answer, because I remember the song well.

This was the time when I was most into music, as a fan and as a musician, and there was so much going on in the music world that this kind of stuff was nowhere near my radar. Tl/dr: googled.

What I can say about pretty much any hit from the 80s is that I don't know it. I got the title -- i.e., I had actually heard of it -- but if I'd had to get it by listening rather than by solving a crossword, I would still be unbeamed.

Fun grid, and based on the grid’s contents and the fact that I was in college in the 80’s I thought it would be an easy click to get the meta. Nope. Totally stumped.

HA! 5 minutes later, now I see it. That’s clever. And an earworm.
Beam me up!

I had been out of high school for 14 years... so that makes me... older.
