Submitted. 100% er. I made it much harder than it had to be. The answer was going to be my Hail Mary.

What is even the matter with me?? I couldn't get anywhere on the WSJ (still can't), so I thought "Well, let me just bang out the Week 1 Gaffney." And here I am. Zero. Nothing. Nada on either of them. Gonna be one of those weekends.

EDIT: Ok, post-enlightenment got me to what has to be the answer. Phew. Gonna take another look at WSJ now. If I'm not back in ten minutes, call the authorities.

Happy to give nudges. If you notice I've solved, please tell me about avenues you've explored so I can nudge you in the right direction and not off a cliff.

Waiting to beam up. Hasn't been an update for about 4 hours now. This one took me longer than it should have for a week 1. But that made it more interesting/fun than a week 1.

HeadinHome wrote: Fri Nov 03, 2023 7:46 pm I got it I think. There was an alternate for one of the letters that had me stumped .. then I found the other option, that works. Submitting.
I know exactly what you are referring to, but you can rule one of them out (for an elegant reason and a less elegant reason lol).
I saw these posts, yet can't for the life of me figure out what alternate you are referring to. I did try looking for it, just to see what it was. But I don't see it. Maybe I have something wrong in my grid. (Or I'm just tired of looking at it?) At least my answer feels like a 100%'er. Still, would be curious what you found.

Back to the WSJ...

Edit: Beamed up in the latest update.

I really don't want to ask for a nudge on a week 1, but I've been staring at this thing and I've slept on it. I must be facing the wrong direction.

Forget that it’s a week 1. Tell yourself it’s a week 2. How would you approach it in that case? You can do it!
If you want help with a meta, feel free to PM me. The more specific you are about what you have and what you want, the more likely I can help without spoiling.

(And if I help you win a mug, I’ll be especially delighted.)

Well, that took a lot of time and help. But there I am just a few places behind cryptic genius Joshua Kosman. Thanks to my helpers!

Wow I needed some major help from the muggles on this one. Hardest week one I can remember.

Edit: looking back I got Naticked on a crucial intersection and without the help of the zoomers I would have never gotten it, or at least had a nasty backsolve.

It finally just clicked for me. Submitted and waiting to be beamed but feel very confident. Definitely felt more like a week 2 based on how easy some of the recent week 1's have been. Fun one though!

I found both MGWCC and WSJ really hard this week!

Got them both, but MGWCC eluded me well into Saturday, despite kicking around the edges of the correct path over and over.

Beamed at last, didn't think I would get this "week 1" :-) Also still annoyed about last week, I had somewhat of the right idea but not enough of the colors.
