I’m off the couch. Fun puzzle with a very nice aha moment.

But I must object to 1 down. “Chocolate substitute” ??? What a ridiculous concept! Chocolate is the world’s most perfect food! There are no substitutes! Yes, I knew what you were going for. I’ve even tried it. And it is no substitute for chocolate 🙂💝
If you want help with a meta, feel free to PM me. The more specific you are about what you have and what you want, the more likely I can help without spoiling.

(And if I help you win a mug, I’ll be especially delighted.)

Off the couch with a collaboration with my solving partner @MaineMarge

I agree with @Dow Jones about having to google only one square.

Haha! Me too! I’m from Pittsburgh originally!
I was born in Pittsburgh...my grandmother got voted biggest Pirates fan in her town and got to throw out the first pitch at a Pirates game.
I was born and raised in central PA and was a fan of all the Pittsburgh teams.

Here's one of my most-prized "Pirate treasures" signed by my favorite Pirate - Willie "Pops" Stargell.

Now back to searching for @Darth's treasure. :D

"Ahoy, Me Hearties! Avast Ye!"...
Here are yer Wednesday Nudges:
images (42).jpg
Nudge #1: The introduction to the puzzle states that “the real pirates of history…terrorized sailors across the Seven Seas.” Seven Seas was a figurative term for all the seas of the known world, but you won’t need to Google their names.
Nudge #2: The central entry in the grid (36A) sounds like it might also be central to solving. Could it be taken literally in some way?
Nudge #3: One of the clues offers some “good advice for meta solving” – take that as a nudge giving you some sort of direction.
Nudge #4: Today’s treasure hunters use a magnetometer to search for shipwrecks, but another clue suggests that ultrasonic waves can locate treasure. That clue also suggests where the treasure can be found. ...."Savvy?... Now, heave ho!"
