MGWCC #792 — Friday, August 4th, 2023 — “State of Disarray”

THIS WEEK’S INSTRUCTIONS:

No instructions given here since there are no-instructions solving options available this week.

Solve well, and be not led astray by words intended to deceive.

–Matt

I’m writing a weekly crossword for Merriam-Webster’s website. It’s a puzzle type called “The Missing Letter” that I created especially for the site: 25 entries in the grid are defined using their M-W dictionary definition, and these each begin with a different letter of the alphabet. The only one not represented each week is “The Missing Letter,” and you can enter to win a $25 gift certificate at their site. Check it out here.

Bronze me! Time to clue my Level 1 for tomorrow.

State of disarray that rivals that of my office:

Beamed up. I loved it.
Nice to have one I can solve, since I'm having big trouble with WSJ & MMMM.

Beamed.
Happy to give nudges. If you notice I've solved, please tell me about avenues you've explored so I can nudge you in the right direction and not off a cliff.

Whoa! For the first time ever I was able to do a downs only! Complete grid!

Unfortunately......

But fortunately I'm not entirely careless.

Awaiting wait is a certain beam
Funny story. I was all set to enter Par for the course for the CrossHare midi contest for April but I mistakenly thought midi meant 7x 7 and not 11 x 11. Oops. Well.... Here's a complex but **small** meta on the subject of golf.

On the board but almost flubbed it. My brain latched on to something else and was refusing to let go but I got there eventually!

Late start as we had company over after going blackberry picking this morning.

#110

Only 1 incorrect answer. Hmmm - who could that be? Someone still swinging for that last badge?

Also, 4 correct answers in the first minute!?

Beamup requested, just missed an update but confident. Not surprised if some could guess correctly without even doing the grid, but people solving with "no instructions" is baffling to me!

Downs-only, no-instructions with a foolhardy blind submission... awaiting beam but confident.

[update] and just like that, my streak hath endeth. Should have peeked, but no guts / no glory, as they say.

[further update] Turns out my answer was accepted - Matt has generous flexibility with us downs-only, no-instructions types - so guts / glory!

Yeah...

I did downs only and got the entire grid and a confident answer to the meta.

But there was no way I was going to submit without peeking at the clues and instructions. Glad I did.

Awaiting the beam... [Fun one!]

... and I'm beamed at #250, bringing up my 10-in-a-row (again). Hope to have it for a bit longer this time!

Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta!
