The contest answer is ROCKY. Each of the theme answers hides the name of a mineral on the Mohs scale (APATITE = 5, TALC = 1, GYPSUM = 2, DIAMOND = 10, TOPAZ = 8). The letters in the correspondingly numbered squares of the grid spell the contest answer.

Sorry for the summer delay, folks. We thought this was a challenging one, dipping into scientific knowledge--but solvers had a very successful week. We had 2424 entries, with an unusually high 93% correct.

Other guesses included SCALY (18) and SCALE (13), STONY (15), TOUGH (9), MINED (3), and AGATE (3).
