Episode #342 Contest: All By Myself

#1

Post by bcimmet »

There's a new contest puzzle from Fill Me In. I'll rate this one 0.71 bananas on a scale of 5 bananas. (Bananas has nothing to do with the puzzle, it's just a 1-to-5 scale we made up.) As always, I have a poor sense of difficulty, but based on the feedback from our testers, this one played quite easily.

The puzzle is called "All By Myself" and was constructed by me (Brian Cimmet). The solution to the puzzle is an 8-letter word.

The crossword can be downloaded from here. You're welcome to solve and talk about the puzzle -- but if you want to be eligible for a prize, you have to listen to the podcast for this week's password. The podcast can be found on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, our own website, or wherever you collect your podcasts.

Once you've solved the puzzle, submit your answer and this week's password by email to fmi@bemoresmarter.com. You can also contact us with any suggestions, questions, comments, or ideas. Thanks for playing along!

Banana's peeled. Fun one - 0.71 indeed.
Thanks for the puzzle!

Yes, banana has been unwrapped. This puzzle made me think of another constructor. Great job by Brian, although the best clue (and truest) was Ryan’s addition.

Glad I listen to the podcast as otherwise I wouldn't have had a clue about 24 across.

Banana is split. Yes, .71 banana difficulty seems exactly right.
If you want help with a meta, feel free to PM me. The more specific you are about what you have and what you want, the more likely I can help without spoiling.

(And if I help you win a mug, I’ll be especially delighted.)

I was unable to complete the grid (bottom right corner) but solved the meta.
Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta!

I disagree. Seemed like a .72 banana to me (based on the grid) ;)

Found this puzzle while looking for something to do since I cannot get a toehold on either of the Tuesday or Wednesday metas. And I don't think that I am "All By Myself" in that regard.

Hello solvers,

The solution to this contest was ISOLATED.

There are eight unchecked letters in the grid that spell (top to bottom, left to right) I-S-O-L-A-T-E-D. The puzzle's title, "All By Myself," hints to this as well. And as personal inspiration, I wrote this puzzle while I was quarantined with Covid.

Thanks for playing! There's another contest puzzle and another post in the forum for it. I hope you give it a try!
