Not a "pageant," but a potential opportunity to benefit from diligence. Saying no more.
'tis... A lovely day for a Guinness!

On shore. Did the puzzle Thursday afternoon, saw the first step then but didn't actually bother to look seriously at the meta until today. This one was right up my alley. Sometimes that's all you need.

Phew. It took me all weekend looking and relooking at this. But I think I got it.

Funny, I started the Mental Floss book this weekend also. The first puzzle actually stumped me for a while since I wasn’t up on my fables. However, you can skip 2 and 3 (as far as I have gone). The grids are fine, but the metas are very easy.Al Sisti wrote: ↑Sun Aug 02, 2020 10:44 amI bought all the Mental Floss books and Peter Gordon's "___ingly Hard" books. They helped me *a lot*!TPS wrote: ↑Sun Aug 02, 2020 10:14 am This has been a strange weekend - since I finished the WSJCC on Thursday I ended up doing the Saturday puzzle on Friday - normally when I do the Sat puzzle on Fri I end up only doing half and then doing the other half on Sat but this week the Sat puzzle was so easy I ended up having it done very quickly. So I decided to attempt my first this MG puzzle in his Mental Floss book - that grid was tough and I ended up having to look up a couple answers - fortunately the meta was very obvious and I was able to see it before I finished the grid. So now I am debating on whether I want to work another of the Mental Floss puzzle’s.

Cindy-I may be missing something, but I don’t see a pageant step in this one.

Ruh-roh. I am now wondering if I found a) the elegant path to the correct answer b) the less elegant path to the correct answer or c) BrianMac's rabbit hole...
I'd like to think I found "a" - my answer seems 100% to me. But I am not going to ass-U-me anything. And I'm looking forward to hearing the explanation for all three!

I'm also confused about the potential PAGEANT on this one. I didn't see it. You did make me double check my work and I just noticed something that makes me even more sure. I don't see any possible way my answer could be wrong.
I'll check back when the contest closes because I'm curious.

I got that from my "legal education" as well. But mine was probably a different school than yours...

undo the crimp on the end of the tube, put the cap on, and shove it in the way it was filled.LadyBird wrote: ↑Sun Aug 02, 2020 11:10 amWhen the kids were little, we did an object lesson on how you can't take your (mean) words back. And then the tears started. Never could get around to making the DESIRED point. But they do still remember their lost $20!
$20 please

I'll pick up your tab at the bar! And I'll have to share that with the kids. We're vacationing in the Eastern time zone and now I'm going to have to stay up until midnight (instead of my usual 11) to see if I got it right. Or if I got pageanted or grilled or hamerkop'd or....
