Number Two Number - April 20, 2022

Published weekly by expert constructor Peter Gordon, the Fireball crossword is famous for being hard. How hard? Well, in the words of Peter Gordon, if you need to ask, too hard for you! It is not regularly a meta crossword, but does feature a contest or meta puzzle several times throughout the year. Available here for a subscription: http://www.fireballcrosswords.com

Grid gave me a headache, though I think I have done it with at least one clue (4D) something I never heard of. I see the first step, for sure, but the next step still eludes me.

Tough grid, meta not quite so tough.
Always good to see a Fireball contest puzzle.

So nice to see a Fireball contest. This one was fun. Not too hard, but not over-easy either. Fingers crossed for a muggle winning the prize package.
If you want help with a meta, feel free to PM me. The more specific you are about what you have and what you want, the more likely I can help without spoiling.

(And if I help you win a mug, Iโ€™ll be especially delighted.)

Likewise extinguished. Friday NYT grid, week 2 Gaffney meta. I definitely agree with the comment above that it's both easy to make a mistake on step two and easy to correct it.

The "State Farm Stadium" clue should definitely have ", on scoreboards" appended to the end of it. That really threw me off.

Several approaches to Step 2... I knew eventually one would have to work!

Just subscribed last night, solved and submitted this morning. Very satisfying when the solution just clicks!

Could someone explain

4D: Underfunded, for short: Abbr. SYN

I never did manage to make sense of that one either

It's just that: "Underfunded" and "Short" are synonyms; terms for "doesn't have enough money"

Just did a puzzle, and the clue was

โ€œSingleton, for one: Abbr.โ€

Ha! Not gonna fool me again! Put SYN right in there. Thank you, Al!
