did you go there?
Yes! So many people haven't heard of it so I get excited when I come across a reference to it.

Ashore! Agree with others that the grid was substantially tougher than the meta. Thanks Peter!

Got it! Now I'll have an audio virus for the weekend. Let's see if a G-n-T cures it! May need more than one : ) ) ) Cheers to all.

On shore - that was cool. Smiled a bit when I saw the full tie-in.

On shore! My fastest meta solve yet and the grid had some nice little twists to it.

HowardHuddleston wrote: Fri Aug 09, 2019 3:24 pm Just looked at this thing a while ago today and the meta popped out without me expending too much "brain power" (fortunately!) although it makes me concerned about forthcoming ones. I've gotten 7 out of the last 9, so revenge will be arriving soon, I am sure! Also, here, I didn't follow down a Peter & Gordon rabbit hole, although I really wanted to.....aren't the constructors supposed to be using their real handles now? Anyway, if it's fakery, I appreciate it.
Peter Gordon is the editor of Fireball Crosswords. I highly recommend it if you like harder grids. He does a meta contest from time to time as well.
Seconded - been subscribed since 2017 and thought it well worth it (note subscriptions are by calendar year, and if you did subscribe today you'd get everything back to January 1, 2019 immediately). FWIW, I'd estimate this WSJ at about a 0.85-0.90 Fireball if you want a comparison. Always very well done grids - about the only gripes I've had is the difficulty going below usual standards two or three times and that it can be a *bit* pricey. Well worth it!

21D was my grandpa's alma mater. And 21D is traditional rival to my alma mater.

Grandpa's song:
"21D was 21D when [my alma mater] was a pup.
And 21D will be 21D when [my alma mater]'s busted up!"

Last laugh: I left those 3 squares blank.

It is a college that many of us went to
Went to a different school with "tech" in the name.

Kurt Vonnegut, who is the Neil Young of authors IMHO (has works that are either great or abysmal), wrote a classic in what I call the post-apocalyptic trilogy -- 1984, Brave New World, and Kurt's "Player Piano". Great reads, especially if done together.

Anyway, Vonnegut who had spent some time at 21D, set the post apocalypse venue in Ilium, NY. Ilium being the Latin term for Troy. It was a very dark and dreary setting, much like Troy.
Speaking (or should I say newspeaking) of "1984," a certain pre-apocalyptic pol has just stated: " We choose truth over facts. "

Nope. Magic eye pictures are a hoax, fake news, the emperor's new clothes. I can prove it - I've never been able to see one, so they can't be real :D Of course, some weeks I feel the same way about these metas

I'm reluctant to post my success, given that I have 42 posts thus far and I hate losing that magical number.

Nevertheless. On shore.

First time here, and first time to work on the meta. If I'm reading the forum correctly, I believe the correct term is "on shore".
