And can people settle a debate between my husband and me? Are all of Gaffney's puzzle designs symmetrical?
Almost universally all crossword puzzles are symmetrical.
I seem to remember a past Gaffney meta in which asymmetry was the key to solving the puzzle. It might have been Matt's contest rather than the WSJ.

I agree and seem to remember that also.

Solved the puzzle quickly, but not the meta. Still out to sea. Definitely need more than one minute for this one.

Well, I found and submitted something. If I'm on the wrong shore, I'm still partying like it's 1999.

Wendy Walker wrote: Fri Dec 18, 2020 10:51 am Sentence written by WLW in annual joint Christmas letter: "A highlight of Wendy's year was winning the Wall Street Journal crossword puzzle competition."
The final product, as amended by Mark: "A highlight of Wendy's year was winning a crossword puzzle competition. The coveted prize was a coffee mug. Her name was selected in a random drawing."
He keeps me grounded! <3
That's just downright unfair! When I won back in April I waited til the next Friday's puzzle announcing me as the winner came out. I then proudly sent the PDF around to family and friends stating; "This is not the first time my name has appeared in the WSJ, but it is definitely the sweetest!"

Yes it's a random drawing, but it's also karma. The crossword gods are looking out for you! Say it loud and say it proud, you are a CROSSWORD CHAMPION!

Spent yesterday digging out of the snow. Spent today chilling on the beach. 8-)

Really enjoyed the puzzle!

Ashore after a nudge (or two) from a kind muggle. A nice Helles lager for me.

Count me as among those on shore. Had a little difficulty at first, but happy to be in the sand.

The title doesn't specify AM/PM. Perhaps you are in bed by 9AM? ;) (At any rate, 9PM is 2100.)

On shore. Got this one quicker than I normally do - I think being a constructor expediated the process a bit. Make it another Moscow mule for me tonight!

Well, that took FAR longer than I wish it had. But it is so satisfying to be on shore after having, and I kid you not, 37 inches of snow fall on my town the other night.
Happy to give nudges. If you notice I've solved, please tell me about avenues you've explored so I can nudge you in the right direction and not off a cliff.

Not much luck last night, and can't make anything work right now. Heading out for an appointment with an actual Isaac.

I'm submitting... I'm on A beach. May or may not be the right one, but it's warm.

I am firmly ensconced in my barstool at Isaac's. Feeling like Charlie Gordon once again.

However... The bombay sapphire martini is quite tasty.

Cheers all.

Once again not seeing it.

Decided not to obsess over these.

Will glance at it some more between watching football and golfing.

No snow in Southern California.

On shore! You can put me in the category of making it way harder on myself than necessary.

On shore. Success three out of the last four weeks, after 6+ months of failures. Probably headed for another dry spell . . . .
