#646 - "Rising Force"

An excellent puzzle written by one of the innovators of the meta crossword format. It comes out every Friday at noon and increases in difficulty throughout the month. Available for modest subscription (worth every cent) here: www.xwordcontest.com

I think that's the third 1A in three weeks. Matt's certainly got a sense of humor.

Grid took forever, but the meta fell pretty quickly.

I got it, but only after some struggles where I tried a bunch of things before the fog cleared and there it was. The grid was indeed trickier than usual.

Strange puzzle. The grid was a slog till I figured out what was going on. The meta was solved within a minute of finishing the grid.

Sleeping on a puzzle DOES help, or at least it did this time. I had decided what the answer almost had to be yesterday but it was a guess based on deduction. Then this AM I awoke with a "hey wait a minute" and a quick trip through the puzzle with a highlighter (and a correction to my grid when I ended up without an acceptable plural) and I am "beaming" or rather beaming up. Funny how the final step for Muggles is to leave the ship (our beloved Love Boat) and for Puggles (my word because with Matt we are going for a Pen/Pencil and taking more than one letter seemed like a rude designation - Hmm, maybe Penguins though?) it is returning to our beloved Starship Enterprise.

No confirmation yet but I'm 100% I'm rematerializing in the transporter room.

Well, that took much longer than it should have. Too distracted by the WSJ, which I am still distracted by.

Question - when I look at the Leader Board some names have a 10 icon and some a 100 icon. Jangler for instance has a 10 icon but that cannot mean his current "streak" because surely he has more than 10? It is probably explained somewhere I just never saw it?

There are 10, 50 and 100 icons. I do believe that they represent streaks. Jangler's streak is above 10 and below 50, so he gets the "10" icon.

RIght, Jangler messed one up a couple of months ago. Crossworld is still deeply shaken.

AH, OK, now I see. I doubt I'll ever have one of those, maybe a 10 but I wouldn't keep it long.
