Nanoo Nanoo.

:)

Picture yourself with a mug on a river
With meta-themed fields, and word crossed skies.
Somebody clues you, you answer quite slowly
Matt Gaffney's kaleidoscope grid.

Did anyone consider ANNA (GO TO HIM), with eleven letters in the title?

Bueller?

Bueller...?

Another great puzzle by Matt! Having said that, starting the puzzle I was hoping it was โ€œI am the Walrusโ€.

Before I noticed all the NA's leading to my submission of Hey Jude, I took note of 58d, KITE, and thought for a second "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite" might be found the grid. A red herring perhaps?

Very nice solution! Worked all weekend, so didnโ€™t get much time to look ... a weak excuse for missing this song! Got stuck on going to 11A (ATL - Atlanta) and saw PAN AM, BOA(C), thought it was airlines... couldnโ€™t see 11. Then stuck on AN instead of NA but there were only 6 in theme answers and way more than 11 elsewhere. At 11:56, put AN and NA together for an ANNA (GO TO HIM) Hail Mary. Brain blanks out the obvious sometimes. Best band ever! I should've put Beatles on shuffle while I worked!

DBMiller wrote: โ†‘Mon Mar 16, 2020 12:01 am So the answer I submitted was, "Hey Jude".

This is due to all the "na"s in the long answers. Let's all sing along...

Na, na, na, na-na-na na
Na-na-na na, hey Jude

So what does this have to do with the title of, "These Go To Eleven"?

I saw two connections:

1) The # of "na"s in the chorus is 11.
2) 11 is the atomic number of sodium. Whose symbol is "Na".
Wow! Kudos on noticing the atomic number of sodium. I never saw that.

I thought some of the pre-deadline comments about the Apple debut clues in the grid bordered on spoiler territoryโ€ฆ Hey Jude was the first single released on Apple Records and I thought that might have been an intentional extra nudge from Matt...

I considered it, but rejected it because it seemed too sloppy. You could find several ANNAs in the puzzle (if you included anagramming adjacent or consecutive letters), but there was no consistency to how to find them, no clue pointing in that direction, and it didn't make sense to have one ANNA right there in plain sight.

So I held off until I found the much more elegant Hey Jude.

Yep I thought of that but there aren't 11 of them.

Loved this one, saw the NA's (although technically there was a Red Herring NA 34A which made it 12 but that was a NA "NAT" in a "theme" answer). I also saw the NA for sodium; one of the first things I saw after I saw NA but then I'd have been drummed out of my profession if I did not. Did anyone else take for a confirmation that "Hey Jude" was, at the time, one of the longest songs every on the Top Charts with the prolonged chorus of NAs taking it to 7 minutes and 11 seconds? That was the pretty little bow on the package for me.
NUDGES!I am always willing to give nudges where needed; metas should be about fun, not frustration. Send me what you have done so far because often you are closer than you think!

Only 8 Na's. Itโ€™s hard to push a song out of your head. Even if itโ€™s not by the Beatles.

Our final, final shore count was 158 with a couple of 11th hour entries.

Good luck winning the mug as there will be long odds.

After dismissing "Anna" as the relevant clue, that song popped into my head, eventually leading me to the correct answer.

"Something Stupid" was Sinatra(s), not the Beatles.

A couple of things first before our roll call. Welcome to our newest muggles: Notbitter, UTHfan, CPKdad and VincentM

Happy Pi Day (we had apple last night), however in the WSJ today there is a debate as to whether we should celebrate Pi Day or Tau Day. I will let you decide.

Also the WSJ Saturday crossword is extremely clever for those who want something to amuse them.

And thanks for posting the links to the slack key guitar links. It was new to me but very enjoyable.

We have 3 muggles keeping Isaac company for now and 120 on the shore. And apologies to anyone I have missed.

On the ship are Geoduck, Tom S and Fishmagik

And on the crowded shore are:

Fortunately the coronavirus does not affect the Love Boat nor virtual beaches so we are safe. We have 3 on the ship and 146 on the shore - closing in on our record of 150 which was set February 20 and tied last week

First we welcome our three newest muggles: Michael S and James S on the WSJ web site and Head Scratcher here

Joining the mob on the shore since yesterday are
Steveb
Lucas
Patty
Barbara K who I missed yesterday and has joined Cindy in my bold (do not forget) lettering
Diane

and Hidden in 3D. By the way Sara - what you experienced in your fund raiser is normal. You are lucky that people did not hand you stuff the day of the event.

anyway stay safe. This virus may be a boon to MGWCC since there is no sports to watch on TV and we can't go anywhere.
OK! You're forgiven!

i got stuck on the anagram for SPINAL TAP in banana split ... [well the P but maybe that was part of the answer] so i wasted time looking for spinal tap song titles and characters and stars names in the other clues. or even other famous movies re rock n roll. i thought the answer re nanana was weak
