but did you get to 11?tonyrobots wrote: ↑Fri Mar 13, 2020 4:35 pm Ashore, had the answer about 30% into the grid solve, which is a first for me. Too easy? Or was I just dialed into just the right headspace?
Stay well, everyone!

My first real ashore, I'm happy that after taking a break it came to me. I've read way too many "meta so easy" comments for past puzzles I'm now doing, and they haven't really seemed easy...but this one does go to 11.

Hawaiian guitar. Open tuning so it plays a g chord (I think - I'm old and forget) with no fingers on the frets. That very distinctive 'Hawaiian' sound. Gabby Pahinui is the godfather. Bruddah Iz, on the start of his version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow/Wonderful World, says "Kay, dis one's for Gabby". Both died too young. Iz played Ukelele (big man playing small guitar). Another sadly gone guitarist from Hawaii is Peter Moon. He played everything, including slack key. A virtuoso on anything he picked up. You can get lost on youtube for days if you start listening to them.Al Sisti wrote: ↑Fri Mar 13, 2020 9:17 pmWow... I've been playing guitar for 60 years, and I've never heard that term or that specific finger-picking style. Haunting and unique. More research is required for sure...Tom Shea wrote: ↑Fri Mar 13, 2020 3:41 pm I think I have the answer, but not real happy about how I got there.
I think I'll have Isaac set me up my Friday martini and think about it when we see the great Led Kaapana tonight at the Ka Na Kapila grill. OK, maybe I won't be thinking about the puzzle until tomorrow morning.

Ashore. Stay positive kids!
Like many, I look forward to finishing that stack of books that have been gathering dust on my desk, with a dog-eared page halfway thru. First up - The Winds of War by Herman Wouk

I haven't found it easy, though with 306 correct submissions already, it must be. I suspect that most of the solvers had a hunch what the answer would be and then fit the letters rather than trying to sort the 20 letters into a phrase. But I was flattered to see that for the first comment on the previous puzzle, Matt had selected mine.

The Savant was ashore before turning out the light last night. Actually before finishing the grid. This morning however this limerick bubbled up in his head because of a quirk in puzzle. Not intended to be a spoiler and likely to be more confusing to those not familiar with the Beatles.
A little naught music
The meta this week’s a no-netter.
Though neither an aid nor abettor,
It seems like the clues
About Apple debuts,
We’re intended to make it all better.

Ashore! Literally and figuratively, since the cruise I was supposed to leave on today has been cancelled. I enjoyed this as a Beatles fan

Ashore. Not my favorite Beatles song.
Now for all the Gen X'ers and beyond, for those of us who were in high school and college when the Beatles hit the scene, don't make us feel older than we already are by "I listened to them with my parents". Coronavirus targeting us is bad enough. LOL

I liked everything about this puzzle.
The title, the meta...the whole package!
On shore 🏖
I’ll take my drink in a paper cup this week, please.

Good morning Muggles
A couple of things first before our roll call. Welcome to our newest muggles: Notbitter, UTHfan, CPKdad and VincentM
Happy Pi Day (we had apple last night), however in the WSJ today there is a debate as to whether we should celebrate Pi Day or Tau Day. I will let you decide.
Also the WSJ Saturday crossword is extremely clever for those who want something to amuse them.
And thanks for posting the links to the slack key guitar links. It was new to me but very enjoyable.
We have 3 muggles keeping Isaac company for now and 120 on the shore. And apologies to anyone I have missed.
On the ship are Geoduck, Tom S and Fishmagik
And on the crowded shore are:

On shore! The Beatles had been broken up for several years by the time my parents were in high school, so they never really listened to any of their music outside of “Sgt. Pepper’s” and “Abbey Road”. The “Love” compilation album came out when I was in high school and really got me interested in The Beatles, so I ended up buying the complete box set of all their albums in college. Funnily enough, I ended up introducing my parents to some of their older stuff (particularly, “Rubber Soul” and “Revolver”), and now we frequently have The Beatles playing whenever we get together for cocktails.
Good music is good music, no matter the genre or generation it came from.

Definitely on the right shore now enjoying a 'true' Black & Tan (Guinness and Bass Ale) in the spirit of peaceful co-existence on St. Patrick's Day weekend.
