As usual, loved the idea, hated some of the clueing (see 18D).

30D was my nemesis; I had the answer but not the mechanism ... until a wiser Muggle showed me the way. I guess I should read the rest of the magazine now. I get so excited for the cryptic, I almost forget there's stuff on the other pages.

Fun puzzle. I actually liked the clue for 18D (though I would probably change one small thing about it).

The cluing does not bother me as much as the use of the word “uncommon” in the instructions.
Are 13A and 31D “common?”
Besides that, I LOVED it!!!

I’m OK with the wackiness of some of the clueing, and the (truly) uncommon. By now, after decades of this puzzle, I’ve gotten to the view that: “It wouldn’t be Maltby without them.”

Wow! What fun! Loved it when the theme dropped.
I taught myself to do cryptics, slowly and painfully, when Harper's first introduced them in the mid 70s. I'd never heard of them and didn't know anyone else who did them.
Over the decades I've migrated to HEX's variety cryptics, but this gem has brought me back to the venerable Mr. Maltby. Thanks for your excitement about this puzzle. That's what prompted me to look it up.

I, like SO many others, look forward to Maltby's monthly cryptic. (even a frustrating cryptic ***I'm looking at YOU "Hex Signs!"*** is usually the highlight of my month)mkmf wrote: ↑Thu Oct 19, 2023 12:54 pm Wow! What fun! Loved it when the theme dropped.

Like mkmf Maltby’s puzzles played a large role in introducing me to cryptics, and I’ve always enjoyed his quirky cluing. Agree with Chris K. about the “uncommon” designations: just another part of the Maltby experience.

The rules for this contest say entries must be received by October 10th. That can't be right, can it?

That is a leftover from last month's issue.
I have no clue what the submission deadline might be.
