#48 - "Character Sequence"

The answer to the meta is a former technology company with a name that is either six letters or two, depending on how you think about it.

PGW says to take your time with this one, as he won't be able to publish a puzzle next week. He'll shoot for one on February 18.

Sent in my answer; 100% on the mechanism, maybe 90% on the answer. Great puzzle... I'm definitely going to be Jonesing for a PGWCC until the 18th.

I think I have it. Will let it marinate a bit since we won’t get a new one for a while.

Two heads were better than one for this one, and while I got part way there on my own, it took a nudge to make me see another approach that I'm sure is correct.

Great puzzle. Classic PGWCC. Tied off with a pretty bow.

Huh? Not a clue.

Edited: three heads are better than one. Backsolved.

Yes, some backsolving was involved on my end, too. Peter confirmed that I got the correct answer, but not the entire process for how to arrive at it. It’s amazing the things I can miss while I’m looking right at them.......
And....I got a nudge, so not one of my better solves.

Finally got this one, glad I kept (occasionally) plugging away at it. I actually did try to backsolve but I couldn't turn up anything that seemed like it met the criteria.

Assuming I got this one right, I also backsolved. But I did find the complete mechanism in the end.

My experience with this puzzle seems to have been similar to at least a couple of others here. I more or less guessed at the answer, after doing some googling to help arrive at it, then looked for a mechanism to arrive at the solution, knowing that a PGW puzzle always has some kind of fun, clever, ingenious, or devious mechanism. When I finally found it (with a nudge from another), I thought, "Why didn't I see that sooner?"

Good one!

He certainly has established a "signature style" in a short time... I really like his puzzles.

My record so far this year:

MGWCC: 6/6
WSJ: 6/6
PMX: 2/2
PGW: 0/4

The good news is that I have another week to figure out this one!

This is my first PGW puzzle/attempt.

Grid solved. Like the 'shoutout' to our Cardinals at 41A.

Have 8 interesting names to work with, and apparently a good amount of time to "sequence these characters". Not asking for any nudges.

I looked at this one again today and I just see the same dead ends I saw the first time. I googled all kinds of stuff and can’t even figure something to back solve. Maybe tomorrow.

Decided to try his puzzles again, since I was done with the WSJ and MGWCC. Solved.
