#645 - "Historical Figures"

An excellent puzzle written by one of the innovators of the meta crossword format. It comes out every Friday at noon and increases in difficulty throughout the month. Available for modest subscription (worth every cent) here: www.xwordcontest.com

Great job by Mollie. Matt must need extra time to work on his late-month scary puzzles.

Nice meta. Played more like a Week 1, but I’m not complaining.

For me it was about a 1.75. Beam me up.

Beam me up! Had Step 1 almost straightaway and spent an embarrassing amount of time chasing my tail before Step 2 clicked.

not sure how we took different paths, once I saw step 1 (which took too long) it immediately drove me to step 2 (an old & cold Matt G method).

we might be describing our steps differently.

Took me 5-10 minutes of frustration and then the lightbulb went on. Beam me up!

I've only been doing metas for a few months now, but this has been one of my favorites! Not too difficult, and a very satisfying path of "aha" moments. Loved it!

That was lovely. Now I am two for five on this week's metas. And I'm already drinking, so probably not going to get any better than that today...

Beam me up. 1.5 to me. But week 1 was 0.5 at best so consistent. Hope Matt does not make up for it in 3-4.

Onshore. I had been totally overcomplicating this!

Actually, I solved this yesterday. I meant to make this comment about the WSJCC.

The more I think about this meta, the more impressed I am. You/we are rating it, difficulty-wise, on how long it takes to solve it. I would rate it higher for the effort it must have taken to create it.

I was thinking the same thing as I solved the meta. Very clever.

VERY nice meta, and I’d bet harder that you might think for new solvers. Great overall construction. Took me extra time due to a consistent confirmation error (once seen can’t unsee) but a comment online made me re-evaluate.

I’m sure we will hear from Ms. Cowger again, I sure hope so.
NUDGES!I am always willing to give nudges where needed; metas should be about fun, not frustration. Send me what you have done so far because often you are closer than you think!
