#645 - "Historical Figures"

Post by Hector »

This week’s contest answer is an eight-letter name.

Today’s meta is the debut puzzle of Mollie Cowger, who began working seriously on crossword construction this summer after dabbling in it on and off for several years. She especially enjoys solving metas and says she is delighted to be making an appearance at MGWCC. She currently lives in Dallas, and you can find her on Twitter at @molliecowger.

Excellent, but now I've done both the WSJ and the MGWCC in just a hour this morning. How will I face the weekend without my usual grid-staring, hair-pulling-out routine?

Also did Matt update his system to auto-check answers? Seems like I was on the board INSTANTLY upon submitting...

I happened to be at my computer shortly after the starter fired his pistol. I wound up only a minute behind Hector.

Haven’t received my email, yet. Anyone care to share?

Never mind. It just came.

After a bone-headed error that made me go "...the hell??" I figured out why I was a bone-head and solved quickly.
Happy to give nudges. If you notice I've solved, please tell me about avenues you've explored so I can nudge you in the right direction and not off a cliff.

I think Matt was just waiting for you to submit before taking a lunch break!

Solved, but awaiting update (100% sure though)

I got about halfway through the grid before peering at the title and author. Didn't really feel like a guest constructor, but very enjoyable grid and meta. Bravo Mollie!

Also, warm welcome to Mollie Cowger! So nice to see a new constructor, and this is a really excellent debut. I've gotten so used to inhabiting Matt's brain, it's always strange to start poking around someone else's ;)

BTW, I heaved a sigh of relief when 23A was NOT what first popped into my mind.
