This week's contest answer is what happened (precisely) on the eighth pitch.

I have an answer but it's not as clever or as satisfying as the usual Gaffney fare, so I'll sit on this for a while.

So far it looks like there have been three correct answers and four incorrect submissions. So that may be a good idea.

As for me, the obvious indication is that this puzzle involves a subject I know very little about. Just googled that subject for dummies to try to figure out what the theme answers mean.

Where do you see how many incorrect submissions there are?

If you look at the Overall tab on the leaderboard, you’ll see all the submissions. Subtract the number correct (from This Week) and you’ll have the number incorrect.

And (at least) three of the five correct answers are from people who construct crosswords themselves, not just plain old ordinary solvers.

Yeah, they're all all-stars; they *average* over 360 MGWCC solves... and there's only been 377 metas in the "leaderboard era."

You don't count as an "average" solver, though, Al.

I struggled enough with the grid, and I see some stuff but this puzzle will clearly be way beyond my pedestrian capabilities. Good luck all.

Unfortunately, no. I still think my idea is the right one, just didn't get the correct ones. Baseball is not my forte.
