#588 - "Call to Order" - September 6, 2019

An excellent puzzle written by one of the innovators of the meta crossword format. It comes out every Friday at noon and increases in difficulty throughout the month. Available for modest subscription (worth every cent) here: www.xwordcontest.com

This week’s contest answer is a two-word phrase.

Fine if unspectacular meta, but I enjoyed the grid. I think I'll trade my 45D 49A for a Bulleit Bourbon.

Beam me up!

I must admit, I don't exactly know what a 45-D + 49-A is -- though I've heard of it. Hmm ... Maybe I should use some of my newfound semi-retirement time to study up on libations!

Beam me up! Thank goodness for week ones. Many things I didn't know in the grid, most notably 13D. I wonder if "guest constructor" month will be easier or harder than a normal month?

Beam me up. Again, this seems to be a cold beer week.

Knocked this one out of the way so I can focus on the WSJ. I'm a little nervous about the guest constructors!

Beam me up as well! Fun one - the way I ended up doing it the backsolve was as enjoyable as the, um, frontsolve?

A session beer is a balanced, highly drinkable beer (usually an IPA) with no higher than 5 percent ABV. My son is a brewer. (Heidi)

Mission accomplished (though I almost made a very careless mistake). Beam me up. That makes 1 for this week. Three yet to go.

Beam me up. Meta made grid solve a little tricky. Enjoyed it though - felt like a week 1.

Beam me up! My first thought upon reading the title was that the meta would be going in a completely different direction.

That actually had me a bit worried since I don’t do cryptics at all. Was glad to see this was just a nice ordinary week 1 meta.

Beam me up! It was good to see Cox and Rathvon here. I'd only seen their cryptics before.

I’m very familiar with their crosswords from years of travel on USAir and its airline magazine. They’re great.

I almost forgot about the S in ANCHOVS and sent in "pizza pies". Glad I always double check; would be really annoying to miss a week 1 from carelessness.
