#586 - "Periods of Reconciliation" - August 23, 2019
This answer to this week 4 puzzle is a ’90s political rival of 55-Across.
Good luck!

Do you ever look at a finished grid and the title and the answer descriptor and just feel sort of hopeless? That was my first reaction. Now I finally think I may be spinning my wheels in the right direction, and I'm just going to savor this feeling as it slowly comes together over the weekend (I hope.) Unfortunately I am also desperately trying to finish Infinite Jest because a library book has become available from my holds list, and between this meta and the book, I'm afraid my neurons are going to short-circuit. If you don't hear from me again, I love y'all.

Congrats! I’ve been this high when catching a week 1/2 at the right time but I’m in the same boat for anything past that.

Beam me up, too! This one is really good. It reminds me (just a little) of another meta - but I can’t say where or when for fear of spoiling.

Beam me up, please. I'll be in Ten Forward waiting for the leaderboard update. I usually prefer to wait til I see my name before announcing that the mission is complete, just in case, but I don't see any way I could be wrong on this one.
My highest ever leaderboard spot was #4. I took a screen shot because I'm sure I'll never see that again.

I hear ya, I was 110% sure but I didn’t post here until I saw it. Didn’t want to jinx it.BarbaraK wrote: ↑Fri Aug 23, 2019 8:05 pm Beam me up, please. One major insight, and then it all fell into place. Leaderboard not updated yet, but I'm sure.

Do any of you do the variety cryptic in Harper's? By Richard E, Maltby, Jr.? (Love that name!) Good one in the September 2019 edition. But sadly, so far I'm 44-D on this weekend's Week 4 MGWCC. Here's the 44-D clue: Confused, in the main (2,3)

I've been semi-confidently charging down a rabbit hole, but it has gotten so narrow that I don't think I can follow it much farther, and I found nothing sensical. Trying to decide if I should try to back out and look for a new hole -- would be challenging, as I'm in pretty deep -- or keep scraping at the walls here. At least I can put the puzzle juice to good use tonight.

In a deep black hole. Nothing I've tried has led to anything. Count me as still staring. (Heidi)

Beam me up. I went down a lot of rabbit holes before I figured this one out.
I still don't know how some of these people can solve the week 4s so quickly.
