Ashore. Finished the grid yesterday and had no clue on the meta. Got it easily this morning; I'll post on Monday what triggered my sudden inspiration.

DrTom wrote: Sat Oct 17, 2020 10:23 am I really do love everybody on this board, but DANG it is frustrating when you look and look at a puzzle and cannot see anything while everyone is saying how simple it is and that the answer is jumping out at them, I'd settle for a "Psst, hey buddy!". Oh, well I'll keep trying...

Not a complete loss because (1) I did get the MCWCC and even better (2) I "won" a chance to pick from my friendly ABC Wine and Spirits bourbon vault and scored a bottle of Weller 12 year. There were many even better bourbons available but I noticed the "Vault" notification about 20 minutes after it arrived and by then they were all gone. However, I think Weller is the bourbon that I like best so far (I've bought several that were 2 or 3 times the cost for not as much satisfaction or smoothness) so I'm delighted. At least I'll have something to either drown my sorrows or, should post enlightenment come, celebrate.
Hmmm. I am also stuck on the WSJ after getting MGWCC. I also won (last month) a lottery pick of Weller 12. My leaf peeping came on a trip this week to NW Arkansas. Not as much red as in the NE US, but pretty all the same.

Here's to post-enlightenment - Cheers!
We appear to be doppelgangers! If that is true, look again at the grid and, if we are still channeling, hone in on my thought pattern because I FINALLY saw the way home! If not, and you can stand the suspense no longer, let me know if you want a nudge - I can be a WELLERspring of information!

YAY solved, and to quote fellow Muggles - DOH! Why I missed that repeatedly I'll never know, perhaps, and given my recent Fall Trip pictures, forget the forest, I could not see the trees for the leaves?

Finally made it to dry land!

I was tempted many times to quit or ask for a nudge. Many thanks to the people on here who kept encouraging others to keep at it. I took encouragement from that vicariously. I finally went back and reviewed the Hints for Solving Meta Contests. (Board Index/Come Aboard/FAQ's - Community / Solving Resources). That was recommended for new solvers somewhere in this thread.

I thought I was beyond that! Just like the coach of a losing team often says: "It's time to get back to the fundamentals".

I feel your pain.
Water temp offshore down here has fallen below 80.
It's so cold, I had to break out a wetsuit (granted, my thinnest one, but a wetsuit nonetheless) when I went spearfishing Thursday.

No more "summer wear" for the time being.

By the way, I discovered a new metric for evaluating the extent of my habituation to retirement: I now own more wetsuits than suit-suits, an important milestone. I can attend more dive outings than funerals without wearing the same outfit twice.

On shore.
As many others have commented, a fresh look helped.

clueless_solver wrote: Fri Oct 16, 2020 10:55 pm LAS, starting to think I'm just rubbish at these and I only solve the meta when it's a gimmick that no one else seems to like. My group tried a bunch of things since there were a few answers that seemed to be obviously related to a solution, but after a few hours of trying I think the whole thing (and the multitude of rabbit holes it caused) was totally wrong. I think I'll just sleep on it.

Does anyone else feel like they always notice double letters way too much, even though I don't think I've ever had a meta that involved that mechanism?
You realize that the first time you ignore the double letters, they will be an intricate part of the meta solution, right?😁

Has anybody seen today's NYT crossword? Is that weird or what?

And you know how you use a word a lot in conversation and then suddenly it starts popping up in crosswords? That's just what happened to me with 1A in the NYT!

(Just kidding - that is one of the most obscure crossword entries I've ever seen. But I need to remember it for when I get just the right letters in Words With Friends.)

Count me with Isaac again. Company this weekend, so not sure I'll get back to the meta. Did have a nice chambolle-musigny domaine roux 1994 last evening that was smooth but too old to be in its prime -- like us, not so disappointing.

First time posting to this board. I've been STRUGGLING with these metas since discovering them this past March -- I get the XWord easily, but can never spot the pattern. (I've solved it only once and was close only two times.)

You all have given me hope and I'm happy to report ON SHORE. :-)

And it's still early on a Saturday!
