Having a namesake Category 4 hurricane is making me feel like apologizing to everyone (sorry about all the devastation...). Please stay safe, everyone.

Yippee -- made it to shore!

Ditto to Laura's comments -- hope everyone along its path is doing OK.

I hope the WSJ guys will notice your bug report. That popup should be dismissible with the ESC key.

To answer your question, though, try closing the browser tab (CTRL-W if it's a PC), and reopening it (right-mouse-menu in the tab bar). I think it only automatically opens the prompt popup the first time you open the puzzle.
Thank you for the suggestion but, alas, no luck. I think you are right that the popup only appears once...as long as you X out of it.
Let me know in the am if it is not fixed and I will send them an email

On shore. I like the construct. After initial stumble the solution seemed straightforward until I got to the end, and became just a little messy in my opinion. Still, this has to be right and I must console myself with something a little less than 100% surety

Dang it! I think I am solid on the method...I really do. I just can’t get a result! 🤨
I’m too close to not bring it home.

This is a 100%er for sure. But you are right IMO - there is some messiness to this puzzle.

Ashore! Chardonnay for me, please. What a clever puzzle, but not who I expected. I’m constantly amazed by the meta creators. Although I feel it’s a 100%-er, I don’t get why it’s funny to some solvers. :?: Either way, good luck muggles!

Edit: now I get it. Such a clever puzzler.

I thought I was about to catch this fat rabbit down the rabbit hole, everything was coming together; but at the last moment I found what I got was gibberish.

Dom and I are on the beach. As is becoming distressingly common, he got there first. Whippersnapper!

Well, I'm sure i have it, but... Just one little piece doesn't seem to fit. So I'll just say I'm still ankle deep in the water. Would it be cheating if someone brought me a Sapporo?

I'm on shore now.

I should have solved this one in 5 minutes after completing the grid but instead it took me close to an hour (while also on a Zoom meeting).
I made one small but crucial mistake where I went down a path that looked correct but was not. I don't think Gaffney did this on purpose; these things happen.

Well DANG it! I am SURE I have the mechanism, but what I get is not an answer that I can see. I'm missing something obviously, just not sure what yet. Maybe it will look different in the morning?
NUDGES!I am always willing to give nudges where needed; metas should be about fun, not frustration. Send me what you have done so far because often you are closer than you think!
