Staring? I've had this puzzle within arm's reach since I finished it Friday morning. And I've stared and stared at it.
I've got nothing and plenty of it. (Apologies to Gershwin) I sent in a wild guess, but that doesn't mean I'm off the ship. No, I'm staying right here. The piano player knows some Monk tunes, and I'll find out "Round Midnight anyway.

Well that took a lot of staring. It turns out I was staring at the right thing, but there was a figure-ground problem.
I'll have whaever everyone else on shore is having. On second thought, in honor of the Savant, make that a Lime rickey.
I hit the wrong quote. Sorry, I wanted to quote Bird.

I think I have one foot at least firmly on the beach, but a rip tide might could wash me back out to sea. That Mike, he's a tricky one.
"Might could" -- I accuse you of being a Southerner.
Had a wrongheaded idea all day but just didn’t seem clever enough to be right. Then looked again at it tonight. OHHHHH. Duh. Yeah that’s pretty darn clever. Must have been a challenge to create!

ON SHORE MAYBE, but i’m through 8 pages of posts that there may be a dispute with the final answer. I could see it going a couple different ways, unless i’m some confirmation somewhere else in the grid. Nuff said for now.
A muggle misconstrued a post of mine, thinking I was advocating for an alternate answer. I wasn't. This answer is 100% clear.

Not Monk or Gershwin. There's a Rodgers and Hart song that kept playing in my mind's ear on when I was trying to backsolve. Details after the deadline.
on shore, nudges told me I was on right track...fair enough. looked at it one last time, and wow. I was slightly off...making my version jibberish.
thanks, getting some wine.

I would bet a lot that you have the same jibberish letters that I had and probably many more!
