This weeks contest is Two By Two created by Mike Shenk (the puzzle creator formerly known as Marie Kelly)

The answer to this week's contest crossword is an animal.

Ashore! Thankfully I now have the weekend to enjoy without the meta hanging over my head.

The grid is still unfinished (including what I am sure is needed for the meta solution) but I am submitting my answer because it just has to be right.
I really enjoy Mike's metas.

Just dog-paddled ashore. Finished the puzzle with no errors, but it took a bit longer than usual ... and then I went down a few rabbit holes before the lights came on.

Got this one quickly. Grid was harder than the meta this time.

On shore 100%! Another clever and fun meta.

Normally I wait for the Friday paper to solve but I know I'll have limited puzzle time this weekend and I wanted to get a head start in case this was a tough one. So Joe Ross' Guide to Solving the WSJ Meta with Excel came to my rescue.

Happily I did not need much time to solve. More time for foo-foo drinks on the beach!

This week, I actually used the meta to finish the grid. Quite a bit I didn’t know and had to get from crosses, so I was pleased with myself that I actually did finish it without google.

Did anyone else try to fit “martini” into 6A?:)
