At 8:20 or so last night, I wondered why the suspended candle holders over the mantel were gently swaying. It had to be the earthquake, making itself felt from 300 miles away.

Dom and I (and the entire family on my wife’s side) are vacationing together in Arapahoe, North Carolina. I printed off a copy for his use, and I’m pleased to report that I beat him to shore! I think he will get there. I’ll update when he does.

I just got to doing the puzzle, and my first thought was "well, that's gonna be a crowded beach" :) All the shaded spots are gone. Oh well.

After muttering that she had no idea, my wife Naomi looked at the grid one more time and... We're ashore!

On shore! First time in weeks. Inspiration struck at the one and only King Tut Drive-In in Beckley, WV.

What a great puzzle!

First comment and first time on shore! I have been lurking for a few weeks to learn the tricks to solving the meta. I guess actually joining the forum brought me luck. Thanks all!

Welcome to the clan. It is always great to have more muggles. For tips to help solve these contests, go to Come Aboard/FAQ's Community/Hints for Solving Meta Contests. Also on the FAQ's Community are some of the back stories on how we got the ship and shore and other things.

Good luck winning the mug

Checking in finally from Isaac’s bar. Visiting family boarded the ship with me and are so charmed with him I may be able to sneak back to my stateroom to take a whack at the meta. Over and out. 25d.

Though I haven't begun, the Sunday NY Times crossword "Hidden Tactics" appears to be a meta puzzle of some sort. I believe you have to be a subscriber to get access to it. (I always find it amusing that the "capitalist" WSJ gives away its puzzles for free and the "leftist" NYT charges a premium for its crosswords.)

Got a chance to look at the puzzle this morning and I was stumped for a little while. After short break, the answer quickly appeared. Ashore once again.

Ashore, finally after about 4 weeks. I've complained in the past that I thought a few of the solutions were obtuse and hence unfair -- certainly not the case with the last several -- as long as you are a bit creative, you should be able to find, and when you get it, you feel like 'it couldn't be anything else'.

However, I reluctantly admit that this must mean I'm not that creative -- should've been able to see each of the last 3 weeks. Oh well, gotta keep practicing!
