This weeks contest is The Fourth Man by Mike Shenk. The answer to this week's contest crossword is a famous American (maybe Matt Gaffney?)

Good luck winning the mug

Quick grid, but no sign of a rabbit yet.

After a few weeks adrift at sea, I'm on shore quickly this week.

I have a meta answer but it's not very satisfying. Will continue pondering!
Good luck, fellow Muggles!

I came up with an answer pretty quickly but despite my best efforts I couldn’t find a clear path to get there. I think I need to come back to this tomorrow with fresh eyes instead of trying to backsolve the answer I want it to be.

Are you getting lonely on the beach or is it nice having it all to yourself?

Definitely some curve balls here. Looking for the slow speed change up to get me on base.

Not the slightest clue yet. Loved seeing 17A, though. One of my favorite novels of all time.

I too have an answer, but is it correct? Aye, there's the rub...

Happy to be on shore! I won't say "for the first time," because I think this happened once before, but in a very rare occurrence I figured out what the answer had to be before I found the justification. Nice construction, and some words that I don't remember seeing before in crossword puzzles!

Still on the ship. 2 potential answers popped into my head right away, but so far can't justify either.

I’ve just joined Isaac at the bar, and I suspect I my seat will be mighty warm by the time (if ever) I leave. Nary a rabbit in sight!

I'm just going to order a drink from Isaac in hopes of getting some of that post enlightenment for myself.

I'm trying not to over-think or to under-think but neither strategy is working yet.

As usual, I have an answer which I can partially defend. "This hasn't worked for me", he said, massaging his battered & bandaged forehead while hosing off too many brick walls.

Taking Heidi & the Shore Birds at their word on this being a 100%er, replumbing rabbit holes, & searching for more. Traveling to MI & MA, this weekend. I may end up submitting current guess at 11:59 PM, Sunday.

Best luck to everyone! Enjoy the weekend!

After looking at the filled grid a second time, I managed to get the solution. I must say, the sheer variety of ways that Messrs. Shenk and Gaffney have found to create a metapuzzle in a basic crossword continues to amaze me!
