Unless I missed someone, the final count was 39, very similar to other MMM weeks.

The answer is UNICORN.

The title and the clue at 36A suggest using the prefix UN with the first part of the five long entries. Synonyms for the UN words are elsewhere in the grid. (The meaning of the UN words is completely unrelated to their meanings without the prefix.) Then UN must be added to the initial letters of those synonyms.
