Giant Globe and Mail cryptic

#1

Post by Richard B. »

I recently came across this cryptic which took more than a few minutes (dare I say hours) of my time. Enjoy!

I also have been receiving this useful daily set of links to many crosswords.

OMG, RichardB!! That’s the biggest cryptic I’ve ever seen! I’ll give it a try.

I may (but probably won't, as I'll get frustrated 3 minutes in) attempt to solve this, but if there was any puzzle that would benefit from solving in Excel, it's this puzzle. Erasing & re-writing answers are too easy.

I can't imagine solving on paper. I'll have deforested New England before solving. Kudos to those who have & will!

From one Richard to another - thanks for the link.

I noticed the puzzle is behind a paywall, have it complete, but wanted to check the solution/explanation on a couple of the answers I didn't quite grok. Is there a link for the solution file you could share (or PM if you don't want to spoil the fun just as yet).

Thanks,

Hey Richard, I just sent the solution by PM. It's my first PM so let me know if you get it. As far as I see on my end, it's sitting in my outbox, not showing in my sent folder.

I can post the link to solution here next Monday for all to see. PM me if you want it sooner. Thanks!

Never mind about the outbox issue. It appears that it sits there until opened by the recipient.

Just finished this and enjoyed it a lot! There are some answers I'm sure of but I don't quite get all the word play elements. But I have a backlog of metas I'm struggling with, so I'm not going to worry about it too much. Putting this one in my "done" pile. And I did it on paper. I'm as proud of the fact that I could read those tiny clues as I am that I finished it!

Here's a link to the completed grid for the Giant Cryptic. It doesn't have the parsing for each answer. If you need some parsing, I should be able to help.
