"Well-Connected" - AVXWords April 10, 2019

#1

Post by BrianMac »

"The answer to the meta is a current slang phrase (9,6) that describes someone who's well-connected, in a sense."

The deadline is midnight on Sunday, April 14.

I usually enjoy Francis Heaney's puzzles a lot. I would normally save it for the weekend, but 5/5 difficulty means I should probably start early!

I didn't find it harder than, say, a week 3 Gaffney. Fun and clever puzzle, but 5/5 struck me as overselling the difficulty. (But maybe it just hit me right - apparently early solver count was pretty low.)

I have the grid completed, and feel like I've solved the meta, but I am not seeing any path to a solution yet.

Well I got it, but I'd never heard the current slang phrase before. So I went to google and searched for plausible things, and when I happened on the right one, I felt I should have guessed it sooner.

OK I got it. I guess. It’s not a slang term I’ve ever heard of. But the meta trick is nice!

I just sent my answer with 20 minutes to go. It makes sense, but we'll see.

Okay, I just looked at everything again and I'm much more confident with my answer now. I'm even going to risk saying it's 100%.

EXTREMELY ONLINE

I never had a chance on this one. I even had EXTREMELY written in the margin as a possible first word. Even had I made the “ONLINE” connection, I would have had to Google it to see if it’s a “thing” (I never heard it), but I’m not sure I would have done that since it seems like such a non-phrase.
